Damascus
wins first Little League state title
St.
Paul, Virginia, Thursday July 28, 2005:
The
Damascus 9-10 year-old girls' softball team claimed a Virginia
state title on Thursday afternoon, posting a 3-1 win over
McLean in the championship game.
Morgan
Lowe got the win in the circle for Damascus, recording 10
strikeouts. Amelia Wampler had several clutch hits for Damascus.
Damascus
had lost to McLean, which is located near Washington, DC,
503 on Wednesday forcing a winter-take-all game on Thursday.
Damascus
delivered.
"The
girls were very excited," Damascus coach David Morrison
said. "Our community hasn't had much success in athletics.
We went back to Damascus and they had a parade for us, within
15 minutes. It's not only brought a lot of excitement to
our kids, but our whole community."
Experience
was a key for Damascus, the District 1 champions.
"I've
had nine of the eleven kids for three years and they've
stuck together," Morrison said. "They put everything
together and we got what we wanted."
