A short drive from Damascus takes you to Grayson Highlands State Park
and the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area with its wild pony sanctuary.

Wilburn Ridge's wild ponies have become more tame over time as more and more tourists enter their world.
But for most of the year they are on their own in their mile-high sanctuary.
DO NOT FEED THE PONIES. You will cause them to lose the foraging skills they need to stay alive.
Be careful. There are many reports of ponies kicking and biting hikers and tourists.
