Living
in Damascus
A random
photo essay about living in America's greatest small town.

The
Wild Ponies of Wilburn Ridge
A short drive from Damascus takes you to
Grayson Highlands State Park
and the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area with its wild pony sanctuary.

Wilburn Ridge's wild ponies have become more tame
over time as more and more tourists enter their world.
But for most of the year they are on their own in their mile-high
sanctuary.
DO NOT FEED THE PONIES. You will cause them to lose the foraging skills
they need to stay alive.
Be careful. There are many reports of ponies kicking and biting hikers
and tourists.

The almost-constant winds of Wilburn Ridge create a new hairdo.

A mother and her foal forage for a meal.

Well, OK, maybe some of the wild ponies aren't too wild.
