- Damascus Police Department has introduced a new community safety program featuring Captain Rook & Rook Jr. This program is focused on safety education, mentorship, and positive engagement, and will include outreach at local events, schools, and community functions. As the program continues to grow, any donations or support for supplies are greatly appreciated and will help expand outreach to more children and families. More information.
- US Forest Service & Kiewit: Virginia Creeper Trail Project Updates. The upper half of the Virginia Creeper Trail remains under strict closure for the duration of the construction period, until otherwise noted. Please be alert to signage and barricades on the trail, and respect trail closures, for the safety of both the public and work crews. The closed area now includes Trestles 16 & 17. The trail closure extends from the Town Park to the VA-NC border by Whitetop Station. More information. (updated January 8, 2026)
- The town-wide speed limit on side streets and alleyways is now 15 mph, unless otherwise posted. The speed limit on US-58 has been reduced to 25mph within town limits. Be aware of posted signage and changes to traffic patterns.

The Town of Damascus will host a community meeting with Kiewit Infrastructure South Co. next week. Kiewit representatives will provide an introduction and overview of the Virginia Creeper Trail reconstruction project and highlight local opportunities for employment and contracts within the project.
Area businesses, contractors, vendors, and laborers interested in working on the Virginia Creeper Trail project are encouraged to attend. Additional logistical support for lodging, meals, office space, transportation, etc., may also be needed.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC MEETING
The Town Council of Damascus, VA will hold a special called meeting on the proposed Town Budget for Fiscal
Year 2026-2027. The budget adoption meeting will be held on May 18th, 2026 at 6:00 P.M. at Town Hall.
The proposed property tax levies for Damascus, VA for the 2026-2027 tax year that would be necessary to fully
fund the proposed budgets if approved by the Town Council are as follows:
A unit levy for general town purposes of thirty-three cents ($0.33) per one hundred dollars ($100.00) of
assessed valuation of all taxable real estate and public utilities and fifty-two cents ($0.52) per one hundred dollars
($100.00) of assessed valuation of all mobile home, personal property, and machinery and tools. Five cents ($.05) per
one hundred dollars ($100) of assessed valuation of motor vehicles owned by volunteer rescue squads and fire
departments at 100% of fair market value as a separate classification of tangible personal property as provided in VA
Code 58.1-3506(A)(15).
The proposed budget is available at Town Hall for review.
